READ PDF DOCUMENTS ON MOBILE PHONES

Reading is one of the greatest pleasures a person could ever have in his or her life. Through reading, we are learning different things, and acquiring knowledge that adds up to our understanding about the world and the whole universe. That is why I really like this hobby of mine, because I am really fond of exploring and discovering something new. Today, I'm reading books about history and early civilizations. I can read it whenever I want to, and wherever I go. Because I'm reading it on my mobile phone (S40). I'm sure we are all familiar about e-books here. Electronic books are books that can be read through an electronic device, and these are really awesome. I have a bunch of these in my Nokia 3110c. Thick and heavy books are old stuffs, the idea of having e-books is very much welcomed to the readers in this modern world. For S40 phones, you can have .jar (Java) format of e-books, and you can download these from a lot of river for free. I have the list of websites for free e-books and audiobooks here. How about PDF documents? Can we read it on our mobile phones? The answer is yes. These are third party applications that we can download to they PDF files, and one is MobilePDF. Hey, I'm not recommending you to use MobilePDF. Actually, using our opera mini browsers, we can they PDF documents. And take note, we don't need to download the file to our phones, so with the PDF viewer and read it offline. As far as I know, mobile PDF viewers could not read very large files, and based on my experience, these could only handle files on bigger than 600 kb. We can just use our browsers, and the best one is Opera Mini. Can Opera Mini read PDF files? No, but it can read .txt and .html files, and a lot more. Different from another web browser for mobile, the UCWeb browser has the capability to preview a PDF file before you download it. See my post about the different mobile web browsers with their unique features here. Since Opera Mini can't read PDF files but can read others, we can just use some free online conversion tools to contest, using the url of the particular PDF. The idea is the same as how Yahoo! provide the user the option to they the PDF as an html file, when it appears on the search engine results. That's a good thing, that we can use Yahoo! search engine for a particular PDF document we want to read as html. Google has also its own ways of doing the conversion. But what if a specific PDF file does not appear in search engines? That is just the case in scribd.com mobile version. Scribd.com has the largest collection of PDF documents that are user-submitted and contains information on almost everything under the sun. I consider this site as one of the best places for repository of knowledge, and the very nice idea of reading these on mobile phones motivated me to find some ways of accomplishing it. Luckily, I found the site for the PDF to html conversion. It is one of Adobe's free online tools which is the best tool I had encountered to directly convert PDF to html just by specifying the PDF url and the one that works on mobile phones. There are a lot of sites that offer free online conversion for PDF but they do not work for mobile phones when any browsers. And now, I will be teaching you how to view a PDF file (particularly Scribd's PDF documents) in an Opera Mini v4.2. Here are the steps. 1. Open Opera Mini and go to www.scribd.com/mobile. 2. Use the search button to search over millions of PDF's and choose whatever you want to read. 3. Click download. 4. You will be directed to a said where you can see a SAVE and OPEN option. Don't click any of the two. You are now on the direct url of the PDF file. Go to Menu, Tools, Add Bookmark, and copy the link in the textbox. 5. Now go to this address: http://access.adobe.com/access/ 6. Paste the PDF url on the url box below. 7. Fill-up the remaining boxes. Choose the format. Text files are of smaller size compared to html files but are lacking in content format. 8. Choose the reason why you are not using Adobe Reader to read the PDF, then on the type of platform you will view the file, choose Handheld device. 9. Click CONVERT. 10. You will be directed to a said where you can PDF a loading bar. It means that Adobe is in the process of converting the PDF. Now you should do the following: a. MENU, ENTER ADDRESS, OK, STOP (1) MENU, ENTER ADDRESS, OK, STOP (2) MENU, ENTER ADDRESS, OK, STOP (3) MENU, ENTER ADDRESS, OK (4) b. MENU, TOOLS, RELOAD. Step 10a tells us to go to that same address and step 11b, to reload the page. Take note that they are different things. Although this maybe an unfavorable job, it will eventually lead you to the converted file that you can download. The number of times you will perform the 11a cycle depends on the size of the PDF. The larger the size, the longer the conversion will take. For a 1mb size, you need about 30-40 cycles.
